Summary

The relevance of the topic is due to the fact that the national and international research in the field of regional economic policies, is a relatively new area of study and involves a wide range of issues, especially such as the regional development in modern times, which is characterized by constant and significant changes that are worth to be paid due attention.

The role of the State in the regional economy is to develop market mechanisms through the intervention of the decision makersfactors in order to reduce the existing disparities and prevent the new ones, and is also a global challenge.

These reasons trigger the development of concrete and effective proposals by the researchers to assist the state in regional development through economic policy, with the support of society .

The issues addressed by the author refer to the analysis of the trends in regional development in the transition to a market economy and the how it is affected by the regional economic policies and strategic priorities for state support, which would affect the development of regions in the future. This testifies to the new concept of development, through the poles of economic and social growth and the availability of highly skilled central and local public administration and a developed institutional infrastructure.

Particular attention is paid to the practice of the European Union in the development and implementation of regional policy, as the Republic of Moldova takes measures for harmonization with the EU standards.

In the scientific sense, the study of regional economic policy in the Republic of Moldova is at its incipient stage. There is almost no regional statistics from the data provider, which greatly reduces the research options, the coordination of sectoral and regional policies and there are great delays in the establishment of the institutional framework, as provided in the Law on Regional Development.

Based on the above assumptions, we believe that the conceptual framework for regional economic policy in the Republic of Moldova should be focused on identification and the state support to urban growth poles which will serve as catalysts for the development of neighbouring areas, and will support the underdeveloped areas.

This work may be used by researchers as well as by central and local public authorities in developing a regional economic policy, and regional development strategies.
