Domain of research: Social Medicine and Management

Goal of research: The assessment and the evaluation of the need and the potential usage of information technologies in perinatal services plus the development of a Perinatal Information System model in perinatal services in Republic of Moldova. Objectives of research: Analyzing the limitations currently existing in perinatal medical service; outlying the main directions, where the use of information technologies would allow the optimization of different activities in Mother and Child Care medical institutions; to develop a robust model for Perinatal Information System and a mechanism to implement the new model in the existing perinatal service in Republic of Moldova.

Methodology of research: Within the framework of the research the following methods have been used – historical, sociological, statistical, modelling.

Novelty and originality of research: For the first time was carried out a scientific study of information systems in perinatology in Moldova and a valuation of the potential for using the information technology in perinatal service management. Subsequently an information technology implementation model was developed.

Theoretical value: The methodology of estimating the efficiency in perinatology was based on the analysis of number of visits and frequencies of hospitalization applicable in various areas of public health. The methodology assessing the benefits of information system in perinatology was based on the analysis of quantity and quality of the medical documentation and the definition of the basic information streams in public health services.

Applied value: The implementation of the proposed recommendations will allow creating an integrated environment that will help those institutions that provide medical assistance in perinatology to share and use the available information technologies. Practical implementation: The proposed solutions and recommendations have been used in the preliminary studies for developing information system for Scientific and Research Institute for Mother and Child Care.
