Summary

In conditions of the information and knowledge society, large implementation of information and communication technologies by all levels of society represents a global trend of world development. The goal of investigations is to identify and determine the place and role of ICTs in the process of the knowledge society development. The paper’s objectives: to delimit the concept of ICT sector in the context of knowledge society; to research the peculiarities of ICT sector development at the global and national level; to identify the methodology of ICTs diffusion; to highlight the main challenges and perspectives in development of ICT sector at the global level; to identify the role of FDI in ICT sector development at the international level; to determine the impact of ICT sector on the economic growth of Republic of Moldova by highlighting the role and place of FDI in this process; to appreciate the efficiency of ICT use in the economy of Republic of Moldova. The goal and objectives of the thesis determined its logical structure, including introduction, three chapters, conclusions and recommendations, bibliography of 142 units, 20 annexes, 44 figures and 14 tables.

The scientific novelty: concretization of ICT sector definition and identification of ICT sector definition in Republic of Moldova according to Classification of Activities from the Economy of Moldova Rev.2; systematization of global tendencies in the development of ICT sector and identification of main challenges and perspectives in the development of this sector in conditions of actual economic crisis; deduction of ICT diffusion formula by mathematical modeling and the use of differential equations; choosing the correlation between the cost of ICTs and the unit cost of solving the economic problems of a state, as well as development of a method for comparing different generations of ICT; appreciation of the ICT use effectiveness in the economy of Republic of Moldova and dermination of the methodological aspects to increase their efficiency; identification, by the use of kinetic function, of the effectiveness analysis methods of ICTs implementation and use; determination of the impact of ICT sector on the economic growth of the Republic of Moldova by highlighting the role of FDI in this process.

The theoretical and practical value of the thesis is focused on the determination of the role of ICT sector in the development of countries and the contribution of FDI in this process in conditions of knowledge society.
