The gene pool of some grain legume crops of genus Vigna and identification of valuable donors for selection. PhD thesis in biology. Chisinau, 2010. The PhD thesis includes 124 pages basic text and consists of introduction, 3 chapters, conclusions and recommendations, 242 bibliographical references, 32 figures and 24 tables. 14 scientific works have been published based on the results of this thesis work.
Key words: Vigna, gene pool, inheritance, variability, heterosis, markers, nucleotide sequences, polymorphism of DNA fragments.
Study domain: 03.00.15 – Genetics.
Research goal: Complex evaluation of the gene pool of genus Vigna and selection of valuable parent material for plant breading.
Objectives: Introduction of new species of the genus Vigna in Moldova; evaluation of genetic diversity of the genus using morphological traits and molecular (RAPD and SCAR) markers; development of effective method for hybridization and selection of promising hybrids; study of type and mechanism of inheritance of qualitative and quantitative characters in F1 and F2 hybrids.
Methodology of scientific research relies on the concepts developed and presented in papers of the following scientists: Pavlova (1953), Korsakov (1975), Balashov (1989), Dorofeev (1990), Vallejos (1992), Quang (1998), Sambrook (2001), Khattak (2001).
Scientific novelty and originality: Adaptability of 6 adventitious ecogeographical species from genus Vigna has been studies in the conditions of Moldova. The obtained F2 populations revealed the increased expression of hybrid vigor. RAPD- and SCAR-fragments specific for genus Vigna have been identified.
Theoretical significance. The possibility of successful cultivation of non-conventional Vigna crops in the conditions of Moldova has been demonstrated. The obtained results essentially enrich the knowledge of biology and genetics of the genus Vigna.
Practical importance. The revealed promising hybrid forms can be further proposed for state testing of new varieties. Created information database and the accessions of the genus Vigna gene pool can be used for various research programs.
Implementation of scientific results. Developed primers and created rich collection of the genus Vigna are used in applied researches in the Centre for Plant Genetic Resources and in other subdivisions of the Institute of Genetics and Plant Physiology.
