Summary

Structurally, the thesis consists of introduction, four chapters and conclusions. It contains 150 pages of basic text, 260 bibliographic references, 63 tables and a drawing.

The results are published in 14 scientific papers.

Field of study: The modern history of Bessarabia.

The goal and research’s tasks: The goal of this work is to recreate a picture of demographic evolution of Bessarabia’s cities during the Tsarist period of time. The main tasks are to present a level of the research of this theme; to consider dynamics of number of some inhabitants of Bessarabian cities; to investigate natural movement of the population and migratory processes in urban environment of Bessarabia; to research the structure of city population as ethnic, social, religious, professional one and according to a sex, age, residence; to present a level of the literacy among townspeople.

Novelty and scientific originality. Following the effectuated investigations, a paper has been elaborated, in which it is presented the evolution of the urban population of Bessarabia in Tsarist period. The study addresses the demographic issues that previously have been treated poorly or were left outside attention. It contains a rich statistical support.

Theoretical significance and applied value of the work. It will serve as a source of information in the elaboration of studies in the field of modern history of Bessarabia, demographics, historical geography, and for education purposes in schools.
