The thesis consists of Introduction, 4 Chapters, Conclusion and Practical Recommendations, 165 references, 2 Attachment. A volume of 92 pages of the basic text includes 25 Tables and 40 Figures. The results have been published in 14 scientific works.
Goal of the work: Development of Salvia sclarea L. intial breeding material and new varieties differing in vegetation period and enhanced productivity.
Objectives: Development and evaluation of inbred lines, simple, triple, double, stepped and complex hybrids of Salvia sclarea L; selection of genetic resources, promising genotypes in the development of different type hybrids. Assessment of quantitative characters, selection of parental forms with a high combining capacity. Determination of the heterosis effect in the F1 hybrids produced. Testing of new hybrids and varieties in comparative competitive cultures.
Scientific novelty:Initial breeding material has been extended and diversified for Salvia sclarea L. Complex, double and stepwise hybrids have been included as parental forms in hybridization schemes. Particular features of hybrid development from different crossing types used as initial selection material have been identified through preliminary evaluation of the parental forms by the yielding components including the content of essential oil. A specific influence of the genotypes in the effect of the heterosis in quantitative characters that have an impact on the raw material and essential oil production has been demonstrated.
Theoretic significance:Establishment of some regularities of the heterosis effect by the quantitative characters, as elements of the productivity, allows regulated created hybrids specifically designed as initial breeding material. This information offers a possibility to predict the heterosis level in simple, triple, double, and stepped hybrids that present valuable sources of the genes favourable for the development of new varieties.
Applied value: Simple, triple, double, and stepped hybrids with a different vegetation period have been developed. They manifest heterosis in a number of quantitative characters, the effect of heterosis being very high in some cases making 15-63%. A new Salvia sclarea L. variety, named Ambra Plus has been developed and registered. It is perennial, frost, wintering, and disease resistant. The yields of the new variety have reached 30 t/ha of inflorescences and 73.3 kg/ha of essential oil during three years of plant exploitation.
