ANNOTATION
Gaţcan Iurie „Corruption as a social phenomenon: the specific manifestation in the
Republic of Moldova”. The doctor’s degree thesis in sociology on the specialty 541.02 – Social
structure, social processes and institutes. Chisinau, 2015.
Structure of thesis: the thesis includes an introduction, three chapters, general conclusions
and recommendations, 150 pages of body text, bibliography of 231 titles, 9 annexes, 14 figures
and 12 tables. The results of the study performed by the author are reflected in 13 scientific
publications with a total volume of 5,9 c.a.

Domain of study: sociology.
The aim of the study is to analyze the defining features of corruption as a social
phenomenon with a systemic dysfunctional/ destabilizing nature, present in a society in transition
and the disclosure of the specific forms of manifestation of this phenomenon in the Republic of
Moldova.
Objectives of the study: determination of types and forms of corruption manifestation;
analysis of the factors that generate corruption phenomenon, study new efficient methodologies
of measuring corruption; analysis of the social impact of corruption; efficiency of anticorruption
actions at local level; identification of the best international practices to prevent and curb
corruption; establishment of effective anticorruption mechanisms at institutional and individual
level.
Scientific novelty of the work consists in multidimensional analysis from a sociological
and legal perspective of social control of corruption phenomenon in the context of socioeconomic
changes taking place nationally and internationally. The novelty of the thesis consists
in analyzing the types and forms of manifestation, generating factors and tendencies of the
corruption phenomenon in the Republic of Moldova during the transition period by using
qualitative and quantitative methods; establishing the research methodologies and mechanisms to
prevent corruption, based on international experiences; determination of legislation impediments
based on field experts opinions and calculation of quantitative indicators of the damage caused
by corruption in the Republic of Moldova; qualitative analysis of the effectiveness of
anticorruption policies.
The scientific problem solved in this thesis consists in the determination of the effective
research methodologies and mechanism of corruption phenomenon, instruments of prevention
and evaluation of the impact of anticorruption policies in the Republic of Moldova. The
implementation of research methodologies established here will help to take more efficient
actions to reduce corruption.
The theoretical significance of this thesis is to outline the explanative-theoretical and
methodological framework of the research of the specific manifestation of corruption in the
Republic of Moldova; of evaluation and prevention mechanisms of corruption; the impact of
anti-corruption policies.
The applied value of this work consists in the elaboration of methodologies of studying
the phenomenon of corruption and the impact of anti-corruption policies at system level,
including administrative-territorial level, in order to implement and develop efficient prevention
mechanisms of corruption phenomenon.
Implementation of scientific results. The results of this study have been reflected by the
author in 13 articles published in various editions and collections of articles. The problems raised
in the thesis have been presented at 11 national and international conferences. A part of the
materials has been applied in specific corruption prevention activities, including research
activities in the National Anticorruption Center, as well as for raising the awareness of younger
generation regarding the phenomenon of corruption at summer schools. The results of the study
may be used for the implementation of anticorruption mechanisms and for the elaboration of a
special course on the phenomenon of corruption in the Republic of Moldova.
