Summary
The paper is a study of Gustave Flaubert’s reception in Romanian culture
based on the principles of modern comparativism that redirects the traditional study
of influences towards the investigation of the reception process, following the thread
of reception esthetics and making use of Jaussian hermeneutics. The paper is divided
into chapters, structured in accordance with the structuralist method and reflecting
the theory of the three main levels of reception of a literary work in a different
culture: 1) reception in Romanian translations 2) critics’ interpretation reception 3)
Flaubert’s influences in Romanian literary landscape. The paper aims at elaborating a
pattern of reception of a foreign writer in a national literature as well as at analyzing
translation activities while identifying the translator’s alterations and interferences,
studying the intermediaries, it also presents the analysis of French values reception,
values significant to the adherence of the Romanian spirit to modernity, the
comparison to other foreign writers’ reception in Romanian culture, evaluating the
Romanian critics’ and comparativists’ contribution to re-reading Flaubert, the
analysis of the evaluation and assimilation of both the contact with Flaubert’s art and
the Romanian writers’ experience resulting from the impact with his writing and
spirit, the actual analysis of several statistical aspects, case studies. The theoretical
and methodological bases of this analysis came into being by references to several
reception theoreticians, comparativists and interpreters of Flaubert’s work. Romanian
historians and critics whose contribution to the literary phenomenon research and to
the Flaubert moment are remarkable (W. Iser, H. R. Jauss, U. Eco, R. Escarpit, M.
Blanchot, D. H. Pageaux, J. de Gaultier, R. Barthes, J. P. Richards, P. Cornea, A.
Marino, M. Martin, E. Simion, D. Grigorescu, H. Zalis, G. Călinescu, T. Vianu, P.
Zarifopol, C. Ciopraga, N. Manolescu, I. Mavrodin etc.). The sheer possibility to
associate a Romanian writer to Flaubert is by itself a onset starting point for the
frame of a fresh, new reading of each of the mentioned creators. The model is
applicable to the investigation of reception in various other literary and cultural
domains of a national literature or of a writer’s work.
