Summary

This work discusses the problem of the Postmodernism in European Literature during the 20th century. The present dissertation focusing on, first of all, on researching Italian Postmodernistic Narrativity presented by world known semiologist and writer Umberto Eco, as well other writers such as: Italo Calvino, Sebastiano Vassalli, Luigi Malerba etc.

The novelty of the undertaken discourse relies on the mode of approaching the Postmodernistic phenomenon by investigating the led to its emergence, its relation to and dissociation from the Modernism and Neoavangardism, but at the same time with a series of cultural, intellectual and social actual phenomenon such as: Structuralism, Poststructuralism, Pop-art, Feminism etc. A special attention drawing to the concrete forms of the Postmodernist poetic manifestation within the Narrative discourse and the position of Umberto Eco`s romans in definition of the European Postmodernism.

The research analysing and put it into the practice a lot of modalities of definition of the Narrative text under the communicative, modal, pragmatic, structural and denominative aspects, which are being related to Umberto Eco as well as to the other European critics and theoretics such as: G. Genette, J. Kristeva, G. Prince, N. Frye, M. Corti, I. Hassan, R. Barth, M. Arrive, etc.

From the different points of view, esthetical-literary, anthropologically, typologic-comparative and linguistic were underlined the character, the specific of conflict and artistic ideal, the personages and subject building principle as well as various methods and literary principles used by Umberto Eco in his own narrativity are going to justify the author’s consideration as a postmodernist. Generally following the postmodernist literary model, Umberto Eco modifies and enriches it with his particular theoretical view, which is often different from the common perception of the phenomenon.

The fact that Umberto Eco is considered a Postmodernist is justified by the identification of the features of the Postmodernist poetics in the discussed romans, of which parallel study with narrative creativity of the other European writers allows the better evaluation of his position within the vast orisons of the postmodernism.

The present dissertation tries to evaluate the whole literature activity of the Italian semiotician and writer Umberto Eco from 1962 till 2002 and at the same time to recognise him as a greatest sagacious of our times.
