In the present research for the first time in Moldova the author tries a monographic study of the short prose written by Leon Donici (1887-1926), one of the most talented writers of Romanian literature.
As a creative personality he was formed in the cultural circles of Petersburg. His novel “new Seminar” (1913) made a student at law a famous writer. After the events of 1917 he arrived at his native Chisinau and with his name Leon Donici-Dobronravov (this is his real name) writes his excellent short stories in Romanian. As a writer of the short story genre Leon Donici shows a deep understanding of beauty, endless searches for answers to some acute questions of morality, his restless thought passionately looks for absolute and eternal truth, tries hard to give a philosophical interpretation of time, death, fate. Some short stories by Donici really make the reader interested and thrilled as literary evidence of the tragic destiny of human life in totalitarian society.
In the research great attention is paid to anti-Utopical dimension of short stories by Donici. It is stated that the Romanian writer had anticipated some literary experiments which would later be popular in European and world literature.
A great significance is given to the idea that Leon Donici was strongly influenced by realism, naturalism, symbolism and expressionism as dominant literary directions of the beginning of the 20th century.
With his short prose Leon Donici had his remarkable contribution to the history of Romanian literature of the 20th century.
