Summary

Tvircun Victor, Dimitrie Cantemir’s life and work (Controversial Issues) is a scientific summary of the thesis for the title of Doctor of Historic Sciences (based on published works), with the specialization no. 611.03 – Universal History, Chisinau, 2019. Structure: The study consists out of an introduction, five chapters, general conclusions and recommendations, biographic information laid out on the 90 pages of the main text. The accomplished results are published in 15 books and 93 scientific articles. Field of Study: Universal History Objectives of the study: The main objective of the present study is to analyze from different aspects the controversial issues of Dimitrie Cantemir’s life and work, exclude a variety of errors and inaccuracies from specialized literature. For the this purpose the following tasks were formulated: the conduct of evaluation a complex analysis of the topic of research’s historiography; an analytical study of the documentary sources relating to D. Cantemir’s life and work; to highlight the political, cultural and intellectual environment in the Moldovan Principality and the Ottoman Empire, within which D. Cantemir’s personality was formed; to study the history and nature of the relationship between D. Cantemir and C. Brankoveanu; to study and highlight the military-political and diplomatic circumstances of D. Cantemir’s ascendance to the Moldovan Principality’s throne; present a new view and assessment, based on the archival documents, introduced into the scientific circulation for the first time, regarding the prerequisites for the concluding a military-political alliance between D. Cantemir and Peter I; based on the new documentary sources to shed light on the unknown and contraversial aspects of D. Cantemir’s life and work in Russia; to conduct a complex analysis and cover the history of D. Cantemir’s remains transfer to Romania in 1935. Scientific novelty: For the first time, the life and work of D. Cantemir, are being presented through the prism of analyzing controversial and at times contradictory statements, characteristics and opinions prevailing in historic literature. For the first time, a comprehensive analysis of historiography of Cantemirology is being carried out along with the specification of its periodization; an introduction into the scientific circuit of new documents referring to the scientific heritage of the Moldovan ruler. Fundamentally new scientific results. The present study, for the first time introduces an entire array of previously unknown documents that were discovered in the archives of various countries and introduced into scientific circulation. The result of scientific research, a new version of the Moldovan Ruler’s biography was presented, more complete and objective, with a broad range of scientific and political activities of D. Cantemir in the Moldavian Principality, the Ottoman Empire and Russia. The first time it was established new scientific direction – recteevolutiv cantemirology. Theoretic value. Thesis’ theoretic value consists of presenting a theoretical basis for the factual and diachronic continuity, in the context of interdisciplinary from the epistemological point of view, and marks the emergence of a new field of historic research, which in its turn permits the elimination of the existing inaccuracies and omissions in the historical science of the Republic of Moldova. Practical value of the study is concentrated on the introduction into the scientific circuit of a significant array of new factual, cognitive and comparative analytical documents, relating to D. Cantemir’s life and work. Moreover, the source of Cantemirology’s database was supplemented with numerous unpublished materials, relating to the scientific and intellectual heritage of the Moldovan Ruler. Inclusion of the scientific results. The scientific results obtained in the course of research, were reflected in the published monographies, collection of articles, numerous articles and reports, published documents; were used in the reports at the national and international conferences and symposia, in the course of lectures on the history of European civilization; within the works published for the title of licentiate, maser and PhD, as well as in the frame of radio and television programs, in the national and international press with the scope of familiarizing the large audience with D. Cantemir’s actual biography and his intellectual heritage.
