The present paper aims at analyzing a special type of set expressions – phrasal verbs (Lat. lŏcūţio, -ōnis, Rom. locuţiune, Fr. locution). Perceived as a means designed to complete the system of nominative units, this language phenomenon is examined from different perspectives (structural-systemic, grammatical, semantic, functional) and related to other glottic units (words, phraseological units etc.)
Adopting an integrative view point on the lexical system in general and on phrasal verbs in particular, the concept of the phrasal verb is being discerned both on a theoretical basis (as the asymmetry of language signs, the principle of economy etc.) and by pointing out some relevant characteristics of phrasal verbs. As a starting point the premise that phrasal verbs have both common features with other adjacent glottic phenomena and specific characteristics that differentiate them from these phenomena.
The fact that phrasal verbs resemble other language phenomena justifies neither their identification with these phenomena nor the attribution of some improper features to them. It does not either allow their treatment as subject matter of some other disciplines, except for the one that studies lexis from different perspectives. In this sense, the observations on the investigated phenomenon made both by using and assessing the approaches (very often convergent and/or complementary) exposed so far by linguists who represent different scientific tendencies, as well as on the basis of personal thoughts, led us to believe that phrasal verbs represent an indispensable layer of the lexical system that completes the system of nominative units in the Romanian language.
