Summary

The thesis consistsof an introduction, 5 chapters, general conclusions and recommendations, a bibliography composed of 324 titles, 22 annexes, 269 pages of basic content, 58 tables, 64 figures. The obtained results were published in 135 scientific papers.

Field of study: Iсhthyology The aim of the thesis: The elucidation of the successional ichthyophaunistic particularities, the structural and functional state of the fish populations in the main aquatic ecosystems of the Republic of Moldova, the elaboration of the recommendations for the protection and improvement of the fishery fund.

Objectives: To substantiate the ichthyofaunistic succession peculiarities and to update the list of fish species in the main aquatic ecosystems of the Republic of Moldova; to analyse of the structural and functional state of fish populations; to reveal the phenomenon of fish bio-invasions and to elucidate the strategies of the expansion of non-native species; to assess the reproductive potential of allogeneic and interventional fish species; reconceptualising the principles of ecological classification of fish species and to identify mechanisms to maintain ecosystem stability in conditions of anthropic pressure.

Scientific novelty and originality: The diversity of the taxon of the ichthyofauna of the main aquatic ecosystems of the Republic of Moldova was updated. The particularities of the ichthyofaunistic successions in aquatic ecosystems of different type were revealed. For the first time in Moldova, there was reported a new species of fish − Gymnocephalus baloni Holcík & Hensel, 1974, and another one, for the Prut river − Bentophilus nudus Berg, 1898. For the first time the invasive fish fauna was thoroughly studied and the strategies of expansion of alien and interventing fish species were deciphered. The reproductive potential of non-alien (4 sp.) and interventing (5 sp.) fish species was evaluated for the first time through histological investigations. There were founded the relativistic approach to ecological classification of fish species that served as support in developing the concept of ecosystem stability and development of a new vision towards tolerance limits of the bio-indicator species.

New baseline results for science and practice: New baseline knowledge on fish fauna has been obtained through the integration of ecological methods into classical ichthyological investigations, in order to reveal the relational peculiarities at different levels of supra-individual organisation, the decipherment of mechanisms for maintaining ecosystem stability and the elabora tion of a sustainable strategy for efficient and rational use of the fishery fund.

The theoretical significance of the work: The obtained results extend considerably the knowledge about the ichthyological diversity and the state of fish populations from the main aquatic ecosystems of the Republic of Moldova, the phenomenon of the fish bio-invasions and the provocative environmental factors. Applicative value: Generalised scientific results on the regularities and the current status of ichthyofauna in the main aquatic ecosystems of the Republic of Moldova served as a ground for the elaboration of measures for the conservation and sustainable use of biological resources and restoration of the productive fishery potential.

Implementation of scientific results: The results of the investigations are used by the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment of the Republic of Moldova, Dimitri Cantemir State University, State University of Moldova, Constantin Stere University of Political and European Studies, Chisinau Ecology College.
