Purpose of the thesis: as a first step, experimental validation of the directional model in Romanian, in order to establish the peculiarities of the computation of directional inferences; as a second step, the formalization of a directional translation subunit by approaching the computation of directional inferences in French and Romanian from the translation process perspective.

Objectives of the thesis: - to identify the main issues related to the subject of temporality in linguistics and philosophy of language; - to describe the basic principles of MID, the algorithm and the hierarchy of information that it posits for the computation of directional inferences; - to design the experimental study for validation of MID in Romanian; - to carry out the first stage of the experimental validation of MID; - to carry out the second stage of the experimental validation of MID by interpreting the results obtained in the first stage and identifying the peculiarities of the computation of directional inferences in Romanian, determining the theoretical implications from a pragmatic and traductological perspective; - to extrapolate the results to the field of translation studies, by advancing a theoretical model of a directional translation subunit; - to formalize the directional translation subunit proposed within a structural and functional model; - to propose ways in which the directional translation subunit can be correlated with the notion of “translation error” and/or applied independently in a learning environment e.g. translator training.

Scientific novelty and originality: the directional (inference) model was validated in Romanian using an experimental study, and the results were formalized in a new translation unit – the directional translation subunit.

Solved scientific problem: the experimental validation of the directional (inference) model led to the clarification of the peculiarities of the computation of directional inferences in Romanian, creating the theoretical basis for the formalization of a directional translation subunit.

Theoretical significance: the experimental validation of MID confirms the fact that this theoretical model is valid outside the characteristics of a single language: the interpretation of temporal dynamic in Romanian corresponds to the general inferential algorithm posited by MID. The theoretical significance stems also form the formalization of the computation of directional inferences in a translation subunit model – a component part of the general inferential processes that occur during interlingual communication.

The applied value: it was shown how the normative dimension of language can be completed, from a learning but also from a scientific perspective, with contributions originating in cognitive-oriented frameworks (Relevance theory, the directional (inference) model); it has been argued that a theory of translation based on Relevance can guide the theory and practice of translation and the training of future translators; a teachingoriented proposal has been formulated in which the directional translation subunit, correlated with the concept of “translation error” or other type of incongruences, can be applied in an Action research by the trainer and as an instrument of self-reflection by the trainee enrolled in a translation program or even by a professional translator.

Results implementation: in scientific papers and reports presented at national and international scientific events; in university courses such as “Introduction to Translation Studies” and “Consecutive Translation” taught at MSU, Faculty of Letters, Department of Translation, Interpreting and Applied Linguistics. 7
