ANNOTATION
Miron Inga. „Estimating the health status of the population from the localities along the Prut river in relation to the quality of drinking water”. The thesis of the doctor in medicine, Chisinau, 2022.
Thesis structure: introduction, 4 chapters, general conclusions and recommendations, bibliography with 150 citations, 115 pages of basic text, 19 tables, 39 figures and 4 annexes. The results are published in 15 scientific papers.
Keywords: water quality, Prut river, aqueduct fed from Prut river, aqueduct fed from artesian wells, wells, population morbidity.
Aim of the study: Determining the impact of Prut river water quality on the health of the riparian population and elaboration of prevention measures.
Objectives of the study: Research and evaluation of the water quality indices from the aqueducts that supplied by the Prut river, from the artesian wells and the local sources adjacent to the river in the multiannual and seasonal dynamics; retrospective epidemiological study of population morbidity in riparian localities of Prut River; comparative estimation of the morbidity among the population consuming water from different sources supplied by the Prut river; assessing the particularities of the water quality indices from the Prut river and the sources supplied by the river, evaluation of questionnaires; establishing the interdependence between the indices of drinking water quality and the population health status, establishing the level of risk; determining the direction and priority measures needed to improve the water supply system and strengthen the health of the population.
The innovation and scientific originality emerges from the complex approach of investigations in a new direction of research, which studies the population health in relation to the environment. For the first time in the Republic of Moldova, the complex impact of drinking water quality from different sources on the population health was highlighted and specific preventive measures were reasoned.
The scientific problem solved in the thesis consists in highlighting the health status particularities of the population from riparian localities of Prut River that uses for drinking purposes water from different sources and of different quality. It was found that drinking water from the aqueduct fed from the Prut River is more favorable for the population health.
The theoretical value: The study fills in the current framework of public health policies with objective and theoretically argued evidence needed to streamline the surveillance and management system of drinking water quality and prevention of water-born diseases. Data is important for science and teaching.
The practical value of study: The obtained results allowed the elaboration of intersectoral measures, scientifically argued, aimed at ensuring the safety of drinking water and the prevention of waterborne diseases. They will form the basis of the public health service practical activity.
Scientific results: The results were the basis for the improvement of some legislative acts that regulate the management of drinking water quality, and serve as a support for consolidating and coordinating the intersectorial activities in the field of ensuring the security of drinking water and the prevention of water-related diseases. They were used to draw up three sanitary regulations on water and health issues.
