Summary

The present dissertation is dedicated to the comparative-contrastive analysis of Roumanian and English affricates from the general, articulatory, acoustic, statistical and didactical points of view. Comparative-contrastive, statistical, mathematical, instructive process observation and conversational methods were used in the investigation. The thesis includes an introduction, four chapters, conclusions, abbreviations, key-words and an appendix. The importance, role and place of Phonetics in the language aspects system; the opinions of well-known scientists and researchers concerning the phonetic nature, phonematic status of affricates and their number in this or that language, as well as some aspects of the historical development of affricates in Roumanian and English are touched upon. The articulatory study of the affricates /ʧ, ʤ/ in Roumanian and English and the Roumanian affricate /ts/ are presented. There follows the acoustic analysis of the affricates /ʧ, ʤ/ in both languages and the affricate /ts/ in Roumanian. The ways of rendering the affricates in writing and their occurrence in Roumanian and English, the statistical analysis of typical mistakes committed by Roumanian-speaking students while learning the pronunciation of English affricates, suggestions concerning their effective teaching and a system of exercises based on these suggestions are presented, too. Theoretico-linguistic and methodico-didactical conclusions, followed by selective bibliography and the appendix including tables, photo-pictures, oscillogrammes and spectrogrammes obtained by us as a result of the performed experiments are given.
