Summary

The research „The aspect of stabilization and increase in soundness of functioning of Moldovan banking sector in the context of the European Union integration” contributes to the extension of research in the respective field, related to the banking sector development and stabilization trends. The research subject represents a major importance, given the significance of the stability and soundness of banking sector for the depositor interests’ protection, for insuring of the continuous intermediation of financial activity and carrying out banking services, as well as for the country’s economic development. The actuality of the theme results from the opportunity to analyse development perspectives and basic consolidation trends of banking sector determined by the EU integration processes.

The present work emphasizes theoretic and practical aspects of stabilization and maintenance of Moldovan banking sector soundness. The author estimates European standards and experience of the EU member-states and CIS-countries in the field of banking sector stability attainment, as well as analyses eventual advantages and vulnerabilities for the stability and soundness of Moldovan banking sector, determined by the pan-European vector.

A special attention in the present work is drawn to the analyses of the supervisory authorities’ role in the stability of banking sector, as well to the opportunity to implement in Moldovan banking sector the relevant European experience, through determining the optimal way in supervision of banking system (by the central bank or by an independent supervision authority). Thesis analyses challenges related to the banking sector instability, through estimation of causes and eventual ways of prevention thereof. At the same time, author emphasizes importance of the deposit guarantee schemes for the stability of banking sector and, based on the international experience, proposes the ways to improve the deposit guarantee scheme presently functioning in Moldova.

The conclusions on the ways of consolidation of the Moldovan banking system, obtained by the author as a result of theoretic research and examination of European experience in the banking field, facilitate the elaboration of concrete proposals with applicability in the process of stabilization and increase of Moldovan banking sector soundness in the context of European integration.
