This thesis deals with the study of the tragic hypostasis in the 20th century novel, prevalently în the best known novels of the writers Franz Kafka, Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway. Organized in three chapters which present theoretical, fictional and literary problems, this thesis defines the tragic from the axiologic point of view, as perathology, as wel as the way in which it appears in the philosophic and aesthetic speech. The topical interest of our approach is explained through the fact that the study of the tragic phenomenon in the novel has been inconclusive, the tragic category being almost always treated in connection with its reflection in the tragedy. In the thesis there have been analised the opinions about tragic of some famous philosophers and aestheticians (Aristotel, G.W.F. Hegel, Schopenhauer, Miguel de Unamuno, Heidegger, Gabriel Marcel, Jaspers, Sartre, T. Vianu, Nietzsche, J.- M. Domenach, J. Volkelt, Lev Şestov, D. D. Roşca, G. Liiceanu, I. Mălăncioiu, Paul Magheru). During the research it has been established that taking out the tragic phenomenon from the tragedy guardiansheep and studying it from the point of view of the way it is reflected in the novel, too, offer us the possibility of some new approaches of the great novelists of the 20th century. The results of this research lead to an outline of a tragic aesthetics and of its hypostasis in the 20th century novel, and prove, once more, the importance of the comparative studies in order to explain some theoretical notions.
The tragic aroused the interest of the 20th century novelists and we can find various hypostasis of this phenomenon in their novels. The comparative method has allowed us to highlight the common issues, as well as the specific features of the analised authors’ way of thinking.
In the 20th century the tragic conflict moved to the hero’s soul, the human being’s self was brought in the foreground, the tragedy as an aesthetic form gave way to the novel, which could be read alone and could be abandoned any time. The tragic hero of the 20th century learned to accept his boundaries in the incomprehensible universe, but he didn’t give up the physical battle. The tension of the inner conflict was created by the refusal to believe that his life was lead by the blind fate that could not be controlled. He declared his liberty and tried to find out who he was. This is the paradox of the tragic vision of the 20th century.
Establishing the tragic elements and the tragic hypostases in the 20th century novel, we can spread our research to some other foreign or Romanian writers from the beginning of the years 1900. The thesis offers some possible directions for further research of the tragic phenomenon, as it studies different aspects that have never been studied before. As a final conclusion we can say that this thesis deals with a modern topic, in concordance to the theoretical and methodological orientations in the present philological research în Europe and in the world.
