The given paper is dedicated to the study of forms and modalities of perception of the Don Quixote novel within the Romanian cultural space. Divided in three chapters discussing theoretical issues, giving literary and comparative analysis, the paper outlines the process of creative perception of Cervantes' novel that includes aspects of Quixote’s vision of the world and the man. The study includes both perception of Don Quixote at the translation level, starting with the first contacts of the Romanian audience with this novel of Cervantes and ending with the latest translation by Sorin Marculescu, as well as perception of this masterpiece of Spanish literature in the interpretation of Romanian critics. However, the emphasis is put on the assimilation of Cervantes' experience in different original works that belong to Romanian writers.
The topicality of the given subject is argued by the need to carry out a study that would reveal the impact of Cervantes’ Don Quixote on the Romanian literature including functional approach to the text, analysing the reproductive moment as compared to the productive one.
As a result of the carried out study it was established that the new perspective of comparative literature study that had moved the emphasis from the study of influences, focused on the transmitter, to the study of perception effects, had determined the redefinition and update of a whole system of notions and concepts. Perception of a work or creation by a writer within other cultural space represents a change in its constructive function while passing from the system of the transmitting literature to the system of the receiving one. The paper presents opinions of a number of literary critics whose contributions to the study of literature and the issue of perception are recognized and appreciated (P. van Tieghem, Y.Chevrel, R. Etiemble, T. Vianu, G. Calinescu, I. Iordan, P.A. Georgescu, A. Marino, D. Grigorescu, V. Coroban, C. Popovici, M. Cimpoi, S. Pavlicenco and others). The results of the study have led to the outline of a synthesis study of quixotism in the Romanian literature, in revealing the most important perception modalities of Don Quixote within the Romanian literary space at different levels: translations, interpretations of critics, creative perception, in the analysis of certain literary works aimed at globalization of Cervantes’ values in original Romanian creations.
The phenomenon of quixotism has raised the interest of writers, in the creations of which we can find different aspects and forms of this phenomenon. The principles and methods of applied comparative study have allowed revealing both common points and particularities of each analyzed character.
As a final conclusion we can state that the paper examines a modern subject,
since quixotism can be found in the attitude and gests of Romanian writers inspired by the work itself, but especially by Cervantes’ spirit, who borrow different elements that correspond to theoretical and methodological directions existing in the modern world philology.
