Summary

Remittances and their economic impact in the Republic of Moldova” The pertinence of the research subject is conditioned by the fact that the funds transferred into the country by nationals employed abroad have recently become, due to their tremendous volume, a very important item of the balance of payments. For some countries they constitute a high percentage of the Gross Domestic Product and exceed many other capital flows, including foreign direct investment.

This thesis aims at the theoretical and methodological study of remittances, the analysis of economic migration from Moldova and the use of remittances, as well as the assessment of their economic impact.

The dissertation clarifies the concept of remittances; includes remittances in the main macroeconomic models; specifies the role of remittances in the countries exporting and importing labour force through a cost-benefit analysis; analyses the dynamics of remittances globally and nationally; investigates the impact of remittances on macroeconomic parameters of the Republic of Moldova.

Based on the findings made during the research, some proposals and recommendations were developed concerning the governmental action in the field of economic migration and remittances. They comprise methods for the mobilization of productive consumption and investment from money remitted, improvement of state policy to stimulate the positive impacts of remittances on the national economy and to reduce negative outcomes in the medium and long term.

Conclusions and recommendations resulting from the investigation may help to develop policies aiming at the improvement of the effectiveness of governmental measures and decisions related to remittances and economic migration. The results of this research can be used in courses on “Economic Theory”, “External Economic Relations”, “Public Finance”, and “Macroeconomics”.
