Summary

The thesis is composed of an introduction, 4 chapters, general conclusion and recommendations, bibliography that contains 404 sources, 252 pages of text, 5 tables and 8 schemes. The obtained results are published in 51 articles and other research works.

The aim of the thesis lies in the description of the way of production, functioning and translation of various structures that express the value of maximum or minimum intensity in French and Romanian Languages. The choice of methods used to carry out the research was determined by the wide-range character of the investigated subject. Considering intensity a complex conceptual category expressed at several levels, the present thesis develops the postulate taking into account the social essence and the dynamics of the language. Special emphasis is placed on the following components: on content, mentality, and substance in correlation with the function of the linguistic sign. The examples are analysed on the basis of the onomasiologic principle, directed from the substance (concept, function) towards form, we use the structures of deep level and surface level, transformational analysis being an efficient method in the semantic, pragmatic and functional interpretation of the investigated linguistic corpus.

The novelty, the research originality and theoretical value of the thesis lies in the following: a) a comparative analysis of the evolution and functioning of intensity in two Romance languages French (Romania of the West) and Romanian (Romania of the East) is carried out for the first time; b) a complex study of the problems of absolute superlative versus absolute intensity has been done; c) a synthesis of the three concepts has been carried out: appreciation, graduation, intensification; d) the traditional appreciations connected with the degrees of comparison and intensification have been examined with discernment; e) the communicative nature of the semantico-structural blocks of absolute intensity has been revealed and the thesis about their functional and pragmatic character has been determined; f) the levels of production and functioning of the structures marked by intensive graduation in language and dialogue have been chosen; g) a special terminology connected with the phenomenon of intensity has been developed and introduced into use; h) a picture of the semantico-functional field of absolute intensity synthesis has been offered; i) special attention was concentrated on the problems and possibilities of translation (from French into English and vice-versa) of the structures including intensemes. The pragmasemantic direction allowed to determine the minimal unit of the absolute intensity called intenseme. The intensemes of the inferior level (morphemes, lexemes and syntagms) produce in co-functioning a larger unit called arhiintenseme (it functions mainly at the level of phrase/sentence and that of text/dialogue). The practical value of the thesis lies in its conceptual substance due to its ample investigation in the field of research disputes based on the statute of graduation or intensification and the pragmatic character of the phrase marked by the intenseme. The thesis relates to didactics as well: the results of the contrastive analysis of the intensity functioning in French and Romanian Languages can be confirmed in various branches of linguistics: grammar, lexicology, stylistics, text analysis, the theory of sentence, sociolinguistics, translation, terminology both practically and theoretically.
