Summary

The object of research of the Doctor’s Degree Thesis constitute the words of a similar phonetic shape but with different meanings, which as a result of paronymic attraction and due to the speaker’s Linguistic Perception, lead to the appearance of the illusory paronymic alliances.

The phenomenon of paronymy being determined by the anthropocentric character, which is manifested through human verbal behaviour, causes the creation of paronymic pairs conceived associatedly. The quasi-identity of form and the semantic non-identity, the binary structure of paronyms, the functional individuality of each paronym are frequently used by speakers non-intentionally in the process of verbal interaction (which is conditioned by the speaker’s Linguistic Perception) and intentionally (in aphoristic, paremiologic discourse, in puns, as an intellectual exercise on the virtuality of language).

By virtue of this aspect of language’s functioning two techniques of the phenomenon of paronymy have emerged: non-intended paronymic attraction and paronomasia (intentional paronymic attraction). The necessities and subtleties of human thought exceed to a great degree the possibilities offered by the system, which motivates the deviation from the norms prescribed, up-to-dated by the phenomenon of paronymic attraction.

The study of paronymy on the level of system allowed us to point out the priority of the formal factor in the realization of operations of encoding and decoding in speech acts, speaking in favour of the choice of the formal discourse, which is a consequence of the desire to emphasize the idea that the signifier in communication is sometimes more important than the signified itself, which becomes covert due to sonorousness of the former, which mnemonically are more acceptable for an ordinary speaker in oral communication.

The study of paronymy from the perspective of theoretical concept of Plural Norm was stressed to rally us to E. Coseriu’s concept, according to which speech (usage), exceeding the prescribed taxonomies and controlling the uniqueness of norm, can exert an influence over the language. Usage, due to its frequency, can cause the appearance of Paronymic Attraction, which in its turn is generated by the presence of the human factor. The phenomenon of “Paronymic Attraction” is characteristic of oral communication in the context of Linguistic Perception. The paronym most widely recognized attracts the one that has not been assimilated yet by the speakers and paronymic alliances are not absent from the written aspect of a language.

We also insisted on semantico-stylistic values of paronymic attraction. The puns, reiteration, paremiologic and aphoristic discourse constitute a productive field of manifestation of the phenomenon under research. The features of paronomasia (its concise character, ellipsis, binary structure, mnemonic function), which have the function of captivating the reader (listener), thus increasing the quality, efficiency, and expressiveness of the language, were outlined
