Summary

The present paper is dedicated to analyzing the impact of Foreign Direct Investments, which can provoke technical and managerial progress, over the development of transitional economies, including the economy of the Republic of Moldova. The modern theories of FDI are studied and the new trends of the FDI volume and structure at the global level and the level of certain countries are identified in the thesis. The role of TNCs as promoters of FDI is pointed out.

The special attention in the thesis is attributed to the study of correlation between FDI and economic growth in different types of countries. The idea of FDI having a positive impact over the economic growth, only when the state attracts FDI according to the national interest and the priorities of the country development, is stated. The influence of FDI over the modernization of transitional economies and their ascension to a superior level of international specialization is emphasized.

The special place in the paper is dedicated to a comparative analysis of investment climate in different categories of countries and the identification of the means for improving it in the Republic of Moldova.

The paper also provides, with the title of “case study”, the analysis of economic activity of a mixed enterprise with participation of foreign capital, and formulates certain suggestions for improving its activity.

The results of the thesis research can serve as theoretical support for refining investment policy, improving investment climate and estimating priorities in FDI attraction for the Republic of Moldova and other countries in transition. Research materials can be also used in the teaching of such university courses as “Economic Theory” and “Economy of External Economic Relations of the Republic of Moldova.”
