Summary

The present research is based upon a series of fundamental approaches concerning the efficiency of the process of autonomous learning, such as docimologic, psycholinguistic and pedagogical approaches.

The topical interest of the research is determined by the problems regarding the integration of Higher Education into the European Area of common concern that aims at an efficient learning of foreign languages. The efficient learning largely depends on the professionalism of the teacher who knows the conditions of developing the autonomous learning competences. The mission of the teacher is to convey knowledge and skills in the field of communication to students by means of efficient strategies and techniques.

The research reveals the theoretical aspects as well as the specific characteristics of autonomous learning in the process of studying the German language; outlines the principles of autonomous learning; determines the conditions, possibilities and disadvantages of autonomous learning in the process of teaching/learning German; develops the strategies of optimizing autonomous learning by teachers and students, contributing to the enhancement of the learner’s personality. It also developed and validated by means of experiment the technological model of developing the autonomous learning competences.

The results of the research offer teachers of foreign language guidelines towards creating optimal conditions to form, develop and evaluate the students’ autonomous learning competences within the process of studying the German language.
