Summary

ANNOTATION PERCIUN Andrei. The Evolution of the Concept of Image in Philosophy. Thesis for a doctoral degree in philosopy. Chișinău 2016. The structure of the thesis includes: an Introduction, three Chapters, General conclusions and recommendations, a Bibliography composed of 218 titles, 6 annexes, 165 pages of text. The results of the research were published in 18 academic works. Key words: image, reflective analysis, phenomenology, representationalism, semiotics, iconic sign, mimesis, khôra, conventional/natural, digital/analogic. Field of study: history of philosophy. Thesis goal and objectives: the work proposes itself to analyze the ways in which the concept of image was researched in the history of philosophy, in order to establish the validity and efficiency of the theories and methods inspired by phenomenology, as compared to the ones influenced by representationalism. The objectives proposed in order to reach the research goal are: to bring into relief the theoretical-methodological grounds of various conceptions of the image; to identify the problematic interpretations of the image in the history of philosophy; to turn to account and describe the phenomenological manners of approaching the image; to establish the role of classical theories of the image for contemporary philosophy; to determine the impact of the image on social reality, corroborating it with semiotics and phenomenology; to evidence the functions and the structure of the image from a phenomenological point of view; to formulate a critique of representationalism using the methodological framework of phenomenology. Scientific novelty of the research results: the present work analyzes the evolution of the concept of image in philosophy. Among the works we have consulted, the present thesis is the first one that uses the method of reflective analysis, which is also applied to the conceptual content of the history of philosophy in order to research the concept of image. We identified, classified and distinguished in a new way the representionalist views, which interpret the image as a plenipotentiary substitute of the object, given that the image would be the primary correlate of consciousness, which perceives and knows the world starting from a representation of it. These representationalist views were put out of the circuit of fundamental groundedness with the application of the phenomenological approach. The method of reflective analysis enabled us to identify which views are guided by the representationalist doctrine. On this basis, we described the structure and the functions of the image, outlining the strata of image consciousness. The important research problem in the field of history of philosophy that we solved is arguing for the necessity of implementing an efficient analysis method for the exploration of the concept of image in the historical succession of philosophical paradigms, evidencing not only a clear perspective on the image, but also reclaiming its usefulness for the scientific exploration of the world. The theoretical significance and applicative value of the work: the suggestions and conclusions we reached in the present work can be used for an integrative research of the image, and the consequences derived from the problematization of the concept of image can be extended on other conceptual questions, including the thematization of meaning and establishing the same and social identity, a concept whose realization is contiguous to the mimetic structure of the image. The method of reflective analysis can also be disseminated in researching other subject. Another important element of the thesis regards revaluating the classical doctrines regarding the image in the context of contemporary philosophy. The implementation of research results was realized by their examining and approval in the meetings of the Sector of Philosophy and the Thematic Research Seminar of the Institute of History of the ASM; were validated in 4 institutional research project of the Sector and Philosophy, and also published in 18 academic works.
