Aim of the work was the revealing the peculiarities of phytoplankton use in monitoring system of aquatic ecosystems’ status in the basins of Nistru and Prut rivers, establishing of natural and anthropic factors that determine the modifications of trophic status and water quality.
Objectives: Revealing the phytoplankton diversity of aquatic ecosystems from Nistru and Prut river basins; evaluation of quantitative parameters of phytoplankton, their seasonal and multiannual successions and highlighting natural and anthropogenic factors that influence them; identification of invasive species (alien and native) from phytoplankton composition; estimation of intensity of self-purification and pollution processes in aquatic ecosystems; assessing of trophic status and water quality of investigated aquatic ecosystems according to quantitative and production parameters of phytoplankton.
Scientific novelty and originality consists in elucidate the particularities of phytoplankton use in monitoring system of aquatic ecosystems status; revealing of phytoplankton taxonomic diversity from main aquatic ecosystems of Nistru and Prut river basins during 2010-2015; identification fro the first time in Republic of Moldova of invasive species (3 alien and 3 native) in phytoplankton composition; trophic status assessment and estimation of self-purification and pollution intensity processes by using quantitative parameter values, of phytoplankton primary production and destructions of organic substances in aquatic ecosystems of Nistru and Prut river basins; completion of the database and of phytoplankton monitoring system of the main aquatic ecosystems from Nistru and Prut river basins with primary data accumulated during 2010-2015.
Solved scientific problemconsists in revealing the diversity, quantitative structure and functioning of phytoplankton of aquatic ecosystems from the Republic of Moldova, which facilitated the elucidation of peculiarities of the usage of planktonic algae in the system of biomonitoring of fluvial and lacustrine ecosystems and allowed assessing the trophic status and water quality based on indicator value of indicator species, quantitative and functional parameters of phytoplankton.
Theoretical importance of the work resides in completing the knowledge of the diversity of planktonic algae communities, highlighting aspects of phytoplankton response to parameter changes in the hydrological and hydrochemical regime of water, elucidating the peculiarities of phytoplankton use in monitoring system of aquatic ecosystems status; establish seasonal and multiannual succession of phytoplankton and of the factors influencing them; description of complexes of algae indicator species in spatial and seasonal layout; estimation of self-purification processes and pollution intensity processes by using the values of primary production of phytoplankton and organic matter destruction in aquatic ecosystems of different type.
Applied importance of the work: of the results is confirmed by the use of data on the biomass of phytoplankton in assessing the trophicity category of aquatic ecosystems, those on the saprobic index, calculated based on phytoplankton and on data regarding the ratio between production of phytoplankton and destruction of organic matter (A / R) – at water class quality assessment, in accordance with acting regulations in the Republic of Moldova. The results are part of reports of Laboratory of Hydrobiology and Ecotoxicology of the Institute of Zoology of ASM on national and international projects.
Implementation of scientific results: Results on use particularities of phytoplankton in monitoring the status of aquatic ecosystems were used at the ellaboration of Regulation on Environmental Quality requirements for surface waters (2013) and of recommendations for remedying the aquatic ecosystems of Nistru and Prut river basins.
