Summary

Thesis structure: introduction, three chapters, conclusions and recommendations, bibliography (115 titles), an appendix, 150 pages of main text, two figures and 24 tables.

Field of the research: linguistic pragmatics.

Research goal: to highlight the linguistic means of formulating apologies in private and public discourse, to emphasize the way extralinguistic factors influence the choice of formulas for remedial work in the two types of discourse.

Research objectives: to examine the speech act of apology from the perspective of the theory of speech acts and of the theory of politeness; to highlight the ways of expressing private and public apologies in Romanian; to examine the influence of extralinguistic factors on expressing apologies in Romanian; to highlight the situations that require an apology in Romanian culture; to analyze the relationship between the form and function of linguistic means used after an offense and their ability to restore the interactional equilibrium.

Scientific novelty and originality of the research: focused on an issue that has not yet been investigated by linguists in the Republic of Moldova, the research represents a first attempt to examine private and public apologies in Romanian by focusing on both similarities and differences in the way this speech act functions in the two types of discourse. In addition, since the formulation of any speech act is influenced by various factors, the paper discusses the way some of them are responsible for the formulation of apologies in Romanian.

Solved scientific issue: the speech act of apology has been analysed from a pragma-socio-cultural-linguistic perspective, in line with the current trend of interdisciplinary approach to language phenomena. This fact has greatly contributed to revealing the elements of remedial work in private and public discourse, the extralinguistic factors that influence the choice of linguistic formulae of apologies and the cultural values reflected in this speech act.

Theoretical importance: from the theoretical point of view, the thesis represents a study of the speech act of apology conducted rather from a sociocultural perspective than from a purely linguistic one. The paper examines the influence of extralinguistic factors on expressing apologies. Moreover, the act of apology is treated both as a unit of communication and as a unit of discourse, and is examined from an interactional perspective. Besides, it has provided important material to formulate some conclusions regarding the cultural values reflected in the speech act of apology in Romanian.

Practical value of the research: the data that have been examined and interpreted and the conclusions and results of this research may serve as a starting point in the investigation of further issues concerning the complex act that is realized in concrete situations of communication.

Implementation of scientific results: the scientific results of this study can successfully be used in such university courses as linguaculturology, linguistic pragmatics, communicative culture and also in the process of teaching Romanian as a foreign language; they might also be implemented in such courses as ethics, aesthetics and diplomatic culture. The results of the research have been published in 10 scientific articles and have been discussed at several national and international scientific conferences.
