Creanga Oxana The Concept of Deictic Centre in the Narrative Text (Based on English Language Materials). Thesis for the Doctor’s Degree in Philology, specialty 10.02.04 – Germanic Languages, Moldova State University, Chisinau, 2012. The thesis comprises an introduction, three chapters, conclusions and recommendations, a bibliography of 240 entries and a glossary. The basic text of the thesis covers 153 pages. The results of the present study were published in 14 research articles. Key words: deixis, deictic projection, canonical situation of utterance, referentiality, narrative deictic centre, the model of fictional narrative communication, narrative entity, free indirect discourse, deictic centre shift, discontinuity. The domain of study is the deictic centre and its projection in English narrative texts at the crossroads of linguistic and narratological approaches. The goal and objectives of the research are to elucidate the mechanisms of reader’s orientation in the narrative world, through identifying the linguistic and inferential means of deictic centre actualization. The research novelty and originality resides in the attempt to uncover the mechanisms of narrative text comprehension and interpretation while relying upon the linguistic tradition, via using the concept of deictic category re-actualized within the modern anthropological paradigm, and via extrapolating the construct of deictic centre from the canonical situation of utterance onto the field of text analysis. The comparative study of narratological and cognitive approaches to perspective and reader’s involvement in the narrative world, on the one hand, and the linguists’ concern with discourse subjectivity, on the other hand, proved very productive in creating a linguistic model of text interpretation that encompasses the major elements of text composition -perceptual-cognitive dimension (WHO), spatial dimension (WHERE), and temporal dimension (WHEN). The important scientific problem solved in the investigated area. The research develops a model that explicates the reader’s orientation within the three-level structure of fictional narrative communication, based on the identification of the deictic centre at each level. The theoretical value of the research is determined by the interdisciplinary approach to some major issues discussed in linguistics and narratology. The application of deictic centre methodology to the analysis of narrative perspective contributes to a better understanding of how Man is reflected in language and through language, with a specific focus on linguistic means used for this purpose in the English language. The practical value of the research. The results of the study can serve to further investigations on various aspects of the problems discussed. The study can also enrich the content of such university courses as Text Analysis, Narratology, Hermeneutics, Text Grammar, Pragmatics and Stylistics.
