Summary

The composer Gheorghe Dima asserted himself within the Romanian field of composition through creations whose value qualify him as the founder of the Romantic Romanian lied in Transylvania. From this perspective, the purpose of the present paper is precisely to emphasize the importance of his work, lying in the stylistic and interpretative particularities, and in the pedagogical ones.

The scientific basis of the present work was comprised of a vast bibliographical material, starting with monographic works, studies, articles, and chronicles, covering the different aspects of the composer’s life, activity and creation, and also the entire compositional panorama of his period, up to the perspectives opened by the reference works from the field of history, musicology, pedagogy or musical aesthetics. From this derives also the value of applicability of this work, which lies in the molding valences of the thesis structuring, which can sustain other similar enterprises of historical, musicological, aesthetical etc research.

The original scientific contribution of the present thesis – without having any monographic pretensions – lies in the comprehensive and inaugural presentation of the lied creation belonging to the Transylvanian composer, with an undeniable and significant theoretical importance to the Romanian musical heritage. At the same time, no less valuable are the practical contributions, on a pedagogical and interpretative level, that the work brings in the field of lied teaching. Knowing and thoroughly studying the musical literature composed by Gheorghe Dima mean to assume and master the vocal Romantic Romanian music, genre whose founder and exquisite representative he was.

The explanations and systematizations that the present work brings in this direction wish to be a modest but promising contribution to what we could call the stylistics of the Romanian lied interpretation. The stylistics of the Romantic lied interpretation, seen from the perspective of this type of creation that belongs to the Romanian composer, represents one of the objectives of the present thesis. The approach from the stylistic perspective of interpreting Dima’s lieds is a statement for the importance and necessity of interpretation of these lieds, a view over the particularities of re-creation through interpretation of Dima’s lied compositions and the ways of their approaching, from the position of both vocal interpret, and pianist.

The conclusions are synthesized in the idea that the vocality and instrumentality in the songs of Gheorghe Dima are perceived as being joined together, and represent the essence and balance of the genre discussed. All the particularities of the sonorous world created by Dima in his lieds enable him to be considered as one of the most important creators of Romantic Romanian lied as well as a brilliant forerunner of the musical national Romanian school.
