Summary

The present study is aimed at conducting research of an important period in the history of choral art evolution in Bessarabia – establishing period, which has not been still adequately reflected in the musicology of the Republic of Moldova.

The objective of this paper is to realize impartially the entire process of evolution in choral singing art within the cultural and historical context of Bessarabia from the end of the 19th century till the World War II, as well as to underline the artistic activity of the most notable choral collectives of that period of time. For the first time a description of the artistic activities of choirs in the religious and laic educational institutions is proposed: – Theology seminary choir, choir of Eparchy girl’s school from Chisinau, choir of Singers’ schools, choirs of Inferior seminaries from Ismail and Edinet cities, professors choir under the vocational training courses for primary school teachers, as well as the artistic activity of a single professional choir in Bessarabia: Bishop’s Choir of the Cathedral of Chisinau. A substantial part of this paper consists of the novelty pages dedicated to great choir conductors as Michail Berezovschi, Michail Barca, Alexandru Cristea, Alexandru Iacovlev etc.

The study is realized on the documentary-historic bases, using the archive documentation, information from Bessarabian and Rumanian periodicals, most of which being presented for the first time to the academic community, as well as the materials from the personal archive of the well-known choir conductor, professor E.Bogdanovschi.

The basis of choral art in Bessarabia was identified, the mechanisms and modalities of autochthonous choral singing practice were defined, there was proposed its periodisation: the key tendencies and peculiarities of singing in this area were identified within the process of definition of the main phases of development, the repertoire has been established. Rehabilitation of the lost or for a long time ignored chapter of the history of music culture in Bessarabia is called to facilitate understanding of choral singing tradition in Moldova in its integrity and complexity, recognition of continuity and its deep foundation while filling in the gaps in the history of national choral art.
