Summary

Doctor’s degree thesis in sociology on the specialty 22.00.04 - social structure, institutions and social processes. Chisinau. 2010.

The results of the undertaken research are reflected in 19 scientific works, with the total volume of 32,22 printing sheets.

Structure of the thesis: the thesis includes an introduction, 3 chapters, conclusions and recommendations, bibliography with 224 titles, 9 appendices, 150 pages, 14 charts, 16 tables.

Thesis’ aim: elucidation and analysis of the peculiarities of the process of forming students’ social identity, by identifying the conditions and social determinants which influence this process. Thesis’ objectives: to analyze psycho-sociological theories on personality and youth social identity; to identify the social groups to which the young student report in determination his social options for the future; to establish the factors which determine social identity formation of students; to emphasize the types of social identity manifested among young students etc.

Novelty and scientific originality of the thesis resides in the analysis from sociologic perspective of social identity, which constitutes an object of interdisciplinary study; elaboration of a theoreticalexplanatory framework of social identity; elucidation of the factors which influence the formation of youths’ social identity; analysis of youths’ identification models; determination of higher education’s major role in personality’s development and identification of the youth as a member of society; determination of students’ tipology; revealing the student’s portrait reflected in mass media sources in order to determine the social attitude towards this social category. Thus, the dissertation research solved a problem of sociology: the peculiarities of process of social identity formation for youth in the context of social change to Republic of Moldova.

Theoretical importance and applicative value of the thesis consist in the fact that a theoretical framework of analysis and investigation of social identity has been delimited, by applying some instruments specific for this research domain. The applicative value of the thesis consists in the elaboration of a theoretical and empirical framework in what concerns studying the process of forming social identity of one of the specific segments of the society – the students.

Implementation of the scientific results. The results of the thesis were included and are useful for university courses of youth sociology, culture sociology, personality sociology, quantitative and qualitative methods of sociological research, etc. organized within the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work, Journalism and Communication (Moldova State University). At the same time, the results of the studies “Public Opinion Barometer – Student of MSU” serve as the empirical material for taking managerial decisions, elaboration of internal policies and strategies within MSU.
